Winter Sports Capital of the World: 2025 Events

Lake Placid is often referred to as the “Winter Sports Capital of the World.” The small Adirondack village has hosted over 510 national and international competitions. 115 World Cup competitions, 19 World Championships, countless concerts, festivals, skating, and hockey championships. Oh, and 2 Winter Olympics.*

The Lake Placid Olympic venues, also known as the Lake Placid Legacy Sites, saw some pretty extensive renovations for the 2023 FISU World University Games. These renovations make it possible for more World Cups and Championships to continue coming to Lake Placid. If you’re looking for something to do this winter, come check out one of these four big events happening in 2025.

FIS Freestyle Aerials World Cup

January 18-19, 2025 | Olympic Jumping Complex

The FIS Freestyle Aerials World Cup returns to the Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid on January 18 and 19. Lake Placid has been a regular stop on the World Cup circuit since 1985, but 2025 marks its first appearance here since 2019. Lake Placid is one of only eight destinations for the 2024/25 FIS Aerials World Cup, so this is a must-see event!

The event will feature individual competitions for men and women, plus a mixed-team event. Watch Olympic gold medalist Christopher Lillis and other members of Team USA, including Winter Vinecki, as they compete against the world’s best in Lake Placid.

IBSF Bobsled and Skeleton World Cup

Now’s your chance to see a preview of what those games could look like! Come witness career-defining moments as athletes race down one of the most technical tracks in the world at Mt Van Hoevenberg. Lake Placid Combination Track is considered one of the most technically demanding tracks for sliders of all disciplines, featuring 20 challenging curves (the most of any competitive sliding track.)

Lake Placid hosted the ECAC Men’s Hockey Championship from 1993-2002 and has been hosting annually since 2014. For over 20 years now, the best teams in the Eastern College Athletic Conference have come to the 1980 Herb Brooks arena to claim the top spot and move on to the NCAA DI Championships.
