How to spend a rainy day
in Lake Placid

We love warm and sunny summer days in the Adirondacks. Playing on the lake. Hiking a high peak. Exploring a nature trail. But sometimes the weather is less than ideal for outdoor fun and mother nature decides we need a rain day. Maybe you don’t care and you just go play in the rain! But if you want to do something fun inside, away from the elements, there are still a number of great options for the whole family. Read on to see how to spend a rainy day in Lake Placid.

Olympic Legacy

Head across the street and check out the Olympic Museum – home to North America’s second largest Winter Olympic artifact collection. The Museum takes you on a journey from the first-ever Olympic Games to the present day. It covers memorable moments along the way, with a whole section dedicated to the 1980 Games so you can relive the magic that stamped Lake Placid in the history books forever.

While you’re there, you can also check out the famed 1980 Herb Brooks Arena!

Indulge in a good book

Do rainy days make you want to curl up with a good book? If so, you should check out Lake Placid’s local bookstore, The Bookstore Plus! They have a large selection of fiction, non fiction, kids (board books through young adult), guidebooks, and local history books.

What’s the plus? They also have a wide selection of art supplies, stationary, puzzles, and more so you can get your creative juices flowing.

The Bookstore Plus also hosts events like author signings, plus every Monday in July and August they have a children’s storytime with stories, crafts, and fun! Follow them on Facebook to see their upcoming events.

Catch a flick

This might be more of a rainy night activity, depending on the day, but it’s worth mentioning. The Palace Theatre is a locally owned vintage theater showing 1st-run movies on four screens. Their prices are great compared to the bigger theaters, including their snacks!

Also worth noting, they don’t presell tickets and only accept cash.

Conquer a climbing wall

Looking for something a little more adventurous? Head out to Mt Van Hoevenberg and try out their indoor climbing wall. It features over 1500′ of climbing space, including a 30 foot top rope wall and a diverse bouldering wall. It’s great for all ability levels, so even if you’ve never climbed, you can have fun!

Rentals are available, and climbing shoes are required.

Sample some brews

Raquette River Brewing, located in Tupper Lake, celebrated their 10 year anniversary in 2023. As part of the celebration, they opened a tasting room in our Alpine Mall! Open daily from 12-6pm, stop in and taste their locally made brews!

If you feel like makign the drive, their Tupper Lake location houses a large beer hall and seasonal patio. They have 44 taps of their brews and guest ciders (like 1911) in addition to various New York State wines and liquors. They also have food trucks outside so you can grab a bite to eat. (The pizza is delicious!)

Bonus – both locations are per friendly!
