Earth Day Every Day

Celebrate Earth Day every day at The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort. The hotel was the first resort in the United States to receive Platinum Certification in the Audubon International’s rigorous eco-rating program. The Golden Arrow is committed to being eco-friendly while delivering a premium guest experience.

We are lucky enough to live, work, and play in the beautiful Adirondack Park. When you look out the giant picture windows in our lobby, you’ll understand why being green is so important. The Adirondack Park is made up of 6 million acres and contains the largest protected area in the contiguous United States. The Golden Arrow wants to do everything we can to stay eco-friendly and protect this “forever wild” forest preserve.

The History of Earth Day

Earth Day started in 1970. Wisconsin Senator Gayland Nelson was inspired by the student anti-war movement and wanted to infuse the energy from protests with emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution. He worked with young activist Denis Hayes to organize campus Tech-ins. They chose April 22 because it was between spring break and final exams. They changed the name to Earth Day, which immediately sparked national media attention. They inspired 20 million Americans to take to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate against industrial development. All this would help lead to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and the passing of the National Environmental Education Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act – all by the end of 1970.

Over the next 50 years, Earth Day would continue to grow and get more people to take action. In 1990, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and giving a huge boost to recycling efforts. In 2000, the Internet helped get 5,000 environmental groups worldwide involved, with a big push on global warming and clean energy.

For the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, 2010 saw one billion people around the world take action. There was also a Global Day of Conversation where 200+ elected officials in more than 39 countries took part in active dialogues about efforts to create sustainable green economies and reduce their carbon footprint. And even though the 50th Anniversary fell during the midst of a global pandemic, Earth Day had the largest mass mobilization in history with 100 million people observing.

2025 marks the 55th Anniversary of Earth Day, and we are as determined as ever to keep our green efforts going. We are always looking for new ways to take action and always welcome helpful suggestions! Here’s some of what we’re doing to celebrate Earth Day EVERY DAY!

Keeping It Clean

BeeKind

Our shampoo and conditioner come from the BeeKind Hotelier Collection.

“Bees are bold, productive, and exciting with a powerful community spirit. Honey bees, bumble bees, wild bees—they remind us not only to stay focused, but to share the delights of life with others around us. BeeKind® started as a brand, but has become a driving philosophy.

Available in paper bottles, a packaging innovation that represents a 59% reduction in material by weight and a 92% reduction in waste space compared to rigid plastic bottles, as well as in 100% recyclable tubes and dispenser options.

To thank Honey Bees for their happy vibe and hard work, it was only right to donate a portion of BeeKind® profits to support the busy bees vitally important cross-pollination achievements.”

Clean the World

We collect the discarded soap bars (also from BeeKind) and send them to Clean the World. Clean the World leads a Global Hygiene Revolution to distribute recycled soap and hygiene products from more than 8,000+ hotel and resort partners to children and families in countries with a high death rate due to pneumonia and cholera. As of April 2025, the Golden Arrow has shipped 2,150 pounds of soap to Clean the World! That soap had been recycled and turned into 14,265 bars to be redistributed.

Recycling

An easy & common practice everyone can do!
We began our in-room recycling program in June of 2007. It was received with a resounding YES! We have had more than 85% of our guests participate in the program during their stays. Since the program’s inception, we have more than doubled the amount of recycling this resort sends out. That means that the amount of garbage that is sent to landfills has been seriously reduced. In 2024, we recycled 14.3 tons

Housekeeping

Towel & Sheet Reusing
This is not very original, and thankfully many hotels have something similar in place. It is something that guests are very familiar with and are comfortable participating in. It is also an easy way for them to help conserve while they are visiting with us.

Cleaning Products
The housekeeping products we use are designed to be easy to use, efficient, and safe, and feature state-of-the-art dispensing solutions and clear, simple color-named packaging. They are “green cove, environmentally preferred” cleaners that all attach to the mixer in our laundry room, so we will use fewer bottles as we will mix them ourselves!

Green Amenities

Our private white sand beach is eco friendly and offers beautiful views of Mirror Lake and the Adirondack Mountains

Private White Sand Beach
In addition to looking beautiful, the white sand on our beach has another purpose. It is made of crushed limestone which helps counteract the effects of acid rain: a big problem in the Adirondack Park. Every spring we truck in tons of it to help keep Mirror Lake clean.

Fitness Center
Even our gym is eco-friendly! It features an Elkay EZH2O Water bottle filling station, flooring made from recycled rubber tires, and Haiku Ceiling Fans (these fans save 80% more energy compared to regular ceiling fans.

Green Roof

Beautiful and beneficial; completed in June of 2008, the Green Roof is a 3,400-square-foot roof that you can enjoy from the deck of Generations Restaurant. Green Roofs have many benefits including creating energy savings by acting as a super insulator, keeping the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also acts as a stormwater management system, catching pollutants as they drain off the roof. This is especially important for us since we are located directly on the lake. The oxygen released by the plants will help the hotel reduce its carbon footprint and hopefully provide a nice habitat for birds and insects. The roof also doubles the life of the roof underneath it by protecting it from the elements.

Compost
Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away, and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Green Eating
A foodprint measures the environmental impacts associated with the growing, producing, transporting, and storing of our food— from the natural resources consumed to the pollution produced to the greenhouse gases emitted.
While we should all be working to reduce our foodprints, there are many factors, including access, affordability, health, and culture that help shape our decisions about what we eat. There is not one prescribed diet for everyone.
